Overpronation is when child's ankles roll too far downward and inward while walking and running.
This happens because hard surfaces like concrete, hardwood and cement do not absorb the shock of the stride well. On hard surfaces either feet or shoes must absorb the shock instead.
Toddlers and young children are especially vulnerable to overpronation because arches in their feet are not yet developed.
Excess pronation, like flat feet, can force the body out of proper alignment and put stress on legs, knees, hips and spine. It can also contribute to development of flat feet.
Good overpronation shoes for children have the following:
Bad quality non-supportive shoes can certainly contribute to problems in children such as flat feet, overpronation and bad posture. It is recommended kids wear good quality supportive footwear until 6 years of age that is time during which their feet are actively developing.
